Major fire destroys Niue power station

9:34 am on 31 May 2006

Niueans have been told to stay home today after a major fire at its power station yesterday.

The fire destroyed the island's main power generator, cutting power to all six hundred households and knocking out the island's water supply system.

Phone services are also affected.

Islanders are now relying on water in reservoirs but engineers are working on a solution using portable generators to pump water into homes.

In the meantime with only two days supply left, people have been told to conserve water.

Authorities in Niue say they will rely on help from New Zealand to fix the generator and restore power.
