It's been confirmed that a former New Zealand police commissioner, Rob Robinson, is to lead a review of policing in the Cook Islands.

The New Zealand Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, says a comprehensive review will be conducted jointly by the Cook Islands Government and the New Zealand aid agency, NZAID

He says a functioning and well performing police force is essential to any country and in the context of the special relationship that New Zealand shares with the Cooks it is important that this country supports this work.

Mr Peters says the objective for the review is to assess the overall effectiveness of the Cook Islands Police.

He says Rob Robinson, who has had close links with policing in the Pacific, is uniquely qualified to lead the review.
