Fiji's SVT likely to have oonly one candidate in May poll

The once-dominant Fijian Political Party, the SVT, is likely to have only one candidate when nominations are filed tomorrow for next month's general election.

And the candidate will be an ethnic Indian, Arvin Deo Singh, who will stand for the Nadi Open seat.

The SVT suffered a major setback last week when its Suva office was broken into and the applications of aspiring candidates and files were stolen, with almost nothing else taken.

The SVT's general secretary, Ema Druavesi, says even the party leader, Sitiveni Rabuka, may not be able to file nomination papers because he is in India recuperating from knee surgery.

The SVT was formed by Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs as the party for indigenous Fijians and ruled the country from 1992 to 1999 with Mr Rabuka as prime minister.
