Voters in a municipal election in French Polynesia go to the polls today in a second round to choose a new mayor of Tumaraa on the island of Raiatea.

The early election follows serious differences between the mayor, Cyril Tetuanui, and his council after he switched parties to join the opposition Tahoeraa Huiraatira.

In the first round of voting a week ago, Mr Tetuanui emerged as the favourite candidate, winning 43 percent of the votes.

He beat Lecourt Hunter of the ruling Union for Democracy who won just over 23 percent of the vote with the Aia Api candidate, Tuti Peu, winning just under 23 percent.

The two candidates have decided to run on a joint list in today's election.
