A 28-year-old man who allegedly fired at former Samoan cabinet minister and election candidate Vaai Papu Vaai on Saturday has been taken into custody.

The Samoa Observer reports that the suspect is from Falealupo village where the shooting occurred.

Vaai was shot at the back of the neck while attending a family meeting.

A son, Va'aiva Vaai said his father was recovering well at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital.

The son believed the shooting may have been politically motivated.

Vaai is running in the Vaisigano No 1 constituency as an independent.

He was previously MP for Falealupo for two terms when he was a member of the Human Rights Protection Party which dominates Samoa politics.
