The Fiji govt CEO says the Great Council of Chiefs chose President and vice President

Fiji's Chief Executive of the Prime minister's office Jioji Kotobalavu says the government does not decide on who will become the country's president and vice-president.

His comments come after the opposition Labour party deputy leader, Poseci Bune, said the government will push for a president who will sack military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

The appointment of the two positions is the responsibility of the Great Council of Chiefs under Fiji's constitution.

Mr Kotobalavu says the allegations made by Mr Bune are nonsense.

"The response really is that this is highly irresponsible for a senior labour party politician to be making those kind of unfounded and unsubstantiated allegations. It is insulting to the prime minister, insulting to the governor of the day, and insulting to the great council of chiefs."
