Tuvalu PM seeks re-election to focus on private sector development

The prime minister of Tuvalu, Maatia Toafa, is seeking re-election on a platform of speedier economic development and political stability.

Mr Toafa goes to the polls for the first time as premier on the 3rd of August.

He ousted the 2002 election winner Saufatu Sopoaga in a vote of no confidence in 2004.

Two MPs are elected in seven of Tuvalu's atolls, and one MP for the eighth and smaller island of Nukulaelae.

Kaupule island councils have the power to forego elections and appoint MPs for atolls in the event there are no challengers.

Prime Minister Toafa says his first priority is to get re-elected as an MP and then seek the premiership...

"...because this is the continuation of the same administration and that is to focus on private sector development, we know we have a very small one, but to do that we need to have the basic economic infrastructure in place, which we don't have much of it."
