Police in Fiji widen net of those suspected of financing 2000 coup

2:46 pm on 6 February 2006

Police in Fiji are close to completing their investigations into individuals, companies and organisations suspected of financing the 2000 coup.

The police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, says they will shortly send a file on this to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice on whether charges can be laid.

This follows the police files already sent to the DPP on two individuals alleged to be connected to the funding of the coup.

Mr Hughes says others are also suspected of being involved.

"There are also other lines of investigation which relate to companies, other individuals and other organisations. Those enquiries have now been completed. The file is in the last stages of compilation and I've requested that it be forwarded to the DPP for a legal opinion."
