Fresh French Polynesia municipal elections in Tumaraa

2:26 pm on 3 February 2006

Fresh municipal elections will be held in Tumaraa on French Polyensia's Raiatea island next month after the mass resignation of the town council.

All council members stepped down last month after a power struggle with the mayor, Cyril Tetuanui.

Polling is set for March the 5th and 12th, with all main parties set to field candidates.

Mr Tetauanui will be backed by the territorial opposition Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party, while the ruling Union For Democracy has nominated Lecourt Hunter and the Aia Api Party has chosen Rosina Moo Fat.

The Tahitipresse news agency quotes Mrs Moo Fat as saying people vote more for personalities than along party lines.
