American Samoa to use Hurricane Katrina aid pledge for other purposes

9:22 am on 24 January 2006

American Samoa's Governor Togiola Tulafono says the government has not sent its US$250,000 pledge as part of the local Hurricane Katrina relief fund.

The governor will be asking the Fono to re-appropriate a large chunk of the money to fund the Political Status Study Commission.

Togiola said this money was supposed to support the local group that the government had hoped to send to the US mainland to help with recovery efforts but Federal Emergency Management Agency did not feel that this kind of help was necessary anymore.
