Futuna loses air link to Wallis over plane problem

1:29 pm on 17 January 2006

The air connection between the islands of Wallis and Futuna has been disrupted since last week because of a technical failure on the Twin Otter plane used for the route.

The French broadcaster RFO says Air Caledonie International, which operates the aircraft, will send an electrician from New Caledonia to check the aircraft.

The plane was donated in 1986 by then Paris Mayor Jacques Chirac who visited Wallis and Futuna that year.

Air Calin says a second plane may be needed in future to guarantee transport links.
