Niue to work with Greenpeace on developing renewable energy

6:52 pm on 15 December 2005

Niue intends to become one of the first countries in the world to use solely renewable energy sources.

Totally reliant at present on imported diesel, Niue has signed an agreement with the environmental group, Greenpeace, to make the shift to using wind energy.

The premier Young Vivian says the cost of fuel and environmental considerations make the idea of shifting to renewable energy appealing.

Greenpeace's Catherine Fitzpatrick, in Sydney, says lack of guaranteed fuel supply is a real issue for much of the Pacific.

"The Pacific's really at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to security of oil supply so for many Pacific Island nations, it's almost a risk-averse strategy to actually diversify your energy supply and make the transition because the price of fuel will not come down quickly. It may never come down again and eventually we'll get to a point where there are going to be competing interests for what is left."
