PNG and Fiji in row over beef import

12:03 pm on 10 October 2005

A trade war is looming between Papua New Guinea and Fiji over Fiji's refusal to accept PNG's corned beef into its market.

PNG's popular Ox & Palm corned beef still cannot get into the Fiji market although it was agreed at the Melanesia Spearhead Group Meeting in August that Fiji should start accepting the corned beef by September.

PNG's Secretary for Trade and Industry, Alois Tabereng, has told the newspaper, The National, that his department is writing to Fiji to them to remind them that the deadline has lapsed.

He said if Fiji did not respond, PNG will consider retaliatory measures such as banning the Fiji Island corned beef or another Fiji product.
