Forum to improve relief coordination

3:20 pm on 12 September 2005

The Pacific Islands Forum says efforts will be made to coordinate an early warning system for the region to cope with possible disasters.

Speaking in Suva at a regional police chiefs' conference, the Forum's secretary general said more concerted efforts would be made to develop more effective, country specific early warning systems.

Greg Urwin says regional agencies will develop better mechanisms for responding collectively to disasters.

He says in the past year, there have been one or two lukewarm attempts but the results were mixed.

The issue has been highlighted following the controversy in the US surrounding the response to Hurricane Katrina.
