Australian cruise ship pulled off reef in New Caledonia

2:09 pm on 5 September 2005

An Australian cruise ship with more than 1,700 people on board has now been pulled free of a reef in New Caledonia.

Maritime authorities in Noumea say the Pacific Sky suffered engine problems and drifted onto the reef of Bayonnaise near the isle of Pines.

Two tugs were sent from Noumea and the vessel was pulled off the reef.

All the passengers stayed on the ship during the night and are now spending the day on shore.
