Tongans in New Zealand fearful of unrest in homeland

Growing unrest in Tonga following a month of strikes has New Zealand's Tongan community fearing the worst.

Some have already brought family members to New Zealand for safety, while others are sending money to Tonga.

There were protests yesterday at the Tongan King's residence in Auckland in support of striking public servants in Tonga who want pay rises of up to 80 per cent.

A member of Auckland's Tongan community, Kalo Mila, says the situation could get very serious if the issues aren't resolved.

Robert Takau, who is also in Auckland, says people in Tonga can expect full support from New Zealand's Tongan community.
