Dispute in PNG over who leads PAP party

3:22 pm on 8 August 2005

The parliamentary wing of Papua New Guinea's People's Action Party, or PAP, says it has elected a new leader after the previous party head was replaced as Higher Education Minister following unrest at the University of PNG.

The new leader is the Works Minister , Gabriel Kapris.

The party says all of its 12 MPs were present at the meeting, except for incumbent leader Brian Pulayasi.

But Mr Pulayasi insisted in a statement that he was still the party leader.

The statement, signed by him and several senior party figures said the party had now sacked Mr Kapris, and two other MPs, Moses Maladina and Kappa Yarka.
