Provisional results in Niue's general election indicate that the Finance Minister, Toke Talagi, may have missed out on a common roll seat by two votes.

Mr Talagi is expected to call for a recount along with two village candidates who lost by one vote.

The Niue News internet site says two new common roll members join the Assembly benches - Hima Takelesi and Maihetoe Hekau.

Other surprise results in the election include the defeat of long time politician Robert Rex jr by the public works outside supervisor, Organ Viliko, in Alofi South.

If the votes are confirmed there will be three women in the Assembly.
