Vanuatu Weekly newspaper to be revived next month

The Vanuatu government has plans to use aid money to revive a historical newspaper next month.

The newspaper started before independence, when the French and British governments were administering the New Hebrides.

Our correspondent in Port Vila, Len Garae, says the Vanuatu Weekly was a mouthpiece for the government until it folded a few years ago due to the lack of funding, and a competitive market.

Len Garae says the government plans to spend 50,000 US dollars to start the paper again.

"The government is short of money and the only way to continue to revive the newspaper is to turn to foreign aid for assistance. It has been promised to come out in May, next month."

Len Garae says the revival would bring the number of weekly newspapers in Vanuatu to three.
