American Samoa's Senate president, Lolo Letalu Moliga, has requested an investigation into the purchases and distribution of drugs and medication in the territory.
The president has asked the Attorney General, Sialega Malaetasi Togafau, to conduct the probe after he received unsubstantiated reports that not all medical supplies bought for the hospital reach their destination.
In a letter to the Attorney-General, the Senate President says the reports indicate that some leaders of the territory could be involved in a scheme that could potentially defraud the government and also violate local laws pertaining to substance abuse.
Sources at the LBJ Hospital have said that at least three members of the hospital management may be getting financial benefits through the ordering of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies from off island companies.
