Planned PNG aviation strike called illegal

2:05 pm on 7 March 2005

A planned strike by employees of the Papua New Guinea Civil Aviation Authority has been declared illegal by the National Court.

The 48 hour strike, which was to have begun today, was in support of a demand by the workers that they receive a 215 US dollar government payment which they claimed had been approved last year.

They said the payment had been paid to other public servants but not to them.

The Court accepted the Authority's request for an order blocking the strike on the grounds that the payment was still being processed by the government.

Union representatives have still to respond to the court's ruling.
