American Samoa National Park suffers cyclone damage

2:59 pm on 3 March 2005

The superintendent of the National Park of American Samoa has returned to Tutuila after visiting Ta'u village in Manu'a in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Olaf.

Doug Neighbor says Ta'u village in particular was virtually devastated, with serious damage to the tropical forest and its vegetation leaving nothing for birds and bats to feed on.

He says there is basically no forest left.

The only green areas he could see were some vines and a few coconut trees.

He says the local bird and bat populations are going to crash and a large number of them will die off.
