The Cook Islands Speaker, Norman George, says the parliament building suffered from the sea surge of Cyclone Meena last week.

Mr George describes the building at Nikao as ancient and dilapidated.

He told the Cook Island News he's hoping to get some money to prepare some conceptual plans for its redevelopment.

Mr George adds the new China-funded courthouse has set a trend which he says everyone wants to follow.

Parliament is expected to sit for the first time this year on Thursday February 24th
