Fiji PM to take legal action against Labour Party MP

9:45 am on 2 February 2005

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, is to take legal action against the Labour Party MP, Poseci Bune.

It follows Mr Bune's claim in parliament and to police last year that Mr Qarase had prior knowledge of the Speight coup which overthrew the Chaudhry government.

Police later cleared Mr Qarase of the allegation.

The head of the Prime Minister's Office, Jioji Kotobalavu, has told Fiji TV that the legal action would be against what was a false and malicious allegation.

Mr Kotobalavu says not only does Mr Qarase want to clear his name, but he wants the legal action to act as a warning to others who make such allegations.

But Mr Bune says he's not worried and a lawsuit was what he wanted.

Mr Bune says he is disappointed with the police because there are people who are prepared to give evidence to back his claim.
