American Samoa leaders say no to smoking

7:04 pm on 12 January 2005

Leaders of the Legislature in American Samoa have issued a joint statement publicly banning smoking at the Fono complex including offices of Senators and House members.

Senate President Lolo Moliga and House Speaker Matagi McMoore said the link between smoking and chronic illnesses has been established and smoking has been banned from other public places because of the proven disaster effect of second hand smoking.

Therefore, the statement said, it pushes the legislature to establish a working environment that will not unnecessarily expose employees, Senators and Representatives to healthcare risk.
