Solomons Guadalcanal premier gives resignation account

3:59 pm on 8 December 2004

The former Guadalcanal Premier in Solomon Islands has revealed his reasons for giving up his post.

Waita Ben Tabusasi says he stepped down after members of his executive deserted him because of his close co-operation with his predecessor, Ezekiel Alebua.

He says the executive members considered Mr Alebua corrupt.

The Tabusasi administration was accused recently of paying Mr Alebua thousands of American dollars, but the reasons for the payments were never made known.

Mr Alebua was Premier when ethnic fighting broke out on Guadalcanal in 1998.
