Runway at Fiji's Nausori airport too short, millions in losses

The runway at Fiji's second international airport at Nausori is too short and is reported to be causing losses of millions of dollars.

The Fiji Times reports that Virgin Blue and Freedom Air are believed to have scrapped plans to use Nausori as they do not have planes capable of landing on the airport's short runway.

Fiji's national airline, Air Pacific, is only able to fly its Boeing 737-800 jets into Nausori by restricting its passenger and cargo loads, and because this model aircraft has enhanced carbon braking systems.

Airports Fiji Limited chief executive, Ratu Sakiusa Tuisolia, is quoted as saying the short runway is costing millions because many international airlines are avoiding flying into Nausori.
