A state funeral has been held in Vanuatu for Alfred Maseng who briefly held the presidency this year.

He died last week after suffering from a serious illness.

The state funeral was ordered to be held on the island of Santo by President Kalkot Mataskelekele and was attended by the prime minister, Serge Vohor, who is also from Santo.

Mr Maseng was a former speaker and a long-term member of the Union of Moderate Parties.

He became the president in May but lost the post a month later when the supreme court ruled that he was ineligible because of a suspended sentence for receiving stolen goods.
