A retired navy mechanic has been selected as the new non-voting delegate for Swains Island in the American Samoan legislature.

The unanimous decision for Alex Jennings was made last weekend during a meeting of Swains Islanders who are U.S. nationals and citizens.

Mr Jennings says he will work closely with the previous delegate, Wallace Thompson, in getting transportation improvements for the atoll.

The vote is the first result for this year's general election, officially set for November 2, when more than 16,000 people will vote for the governor, the congressional candidate and members of the local House.
