Concerns over labour shortage in Niue

5:36 pm on 7 October 2004

The re-establishement of some businesses in Niue is raising concern over Labour shortages.

Niue is recovering after Cyclone Heta hit the island in January destroying all the established industries, such as the vanilla and noni plantations.

The Minister for Economic Development, Bill Vakaafi-Motu Foou, says the country is slowly returning to normal, and with new businesses coming on line, there is a need to look at Niue's labour force.

"The nonu farm will require up to 40 people soon when it's in full operation. The fish factory will require about 20 people. At the moment we are short of labour. We may have to call on Niueans abroad."
