Nauru feared to fail as state

2:24 pm on 6 August 2004

The Pacific's group of six Small Island States says the region must do what it can to help Nauru or risk it becoming a failed state.

Nauru, along with the Cook Islands, the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, Kiribati and Niue make up the body which met today to consider issues pertinent to it.

These included global warming, the transporting of hazardous materials through their seas, the impacts on their economies of the cost of fuel, and economic and environmental security.

But speaking on behalf of the group, Cook Islands Prime Minister, Dr Robert Woonton, says a report from Nauru officials on the island's financial plight show it could become a failed state.
