Fiji issues dengue alert after Palau outbreak

9:20 pm on 2 August 2004

Health authorities in Fiji have issued a nationwide dengue fever alert following an outbreak of the disease in Palau.

Radio Fiji says the alert comes at the end of the Festival of Pacific Arts in Palau's capital Koror as hundreds of participants return to their countries.

The radio says 20 people caught the disease which is believed to have been carried by a Fiji participant in the festival.

A senior Fiji health official, Dr Joe Koroivueta, says the dengue suspect will be screened when he arrives at Nadi International Airport.

He says officials will be aggressive in surveillance because they do not want the dengue virus to return to Fiji and spread.

Fiji has had a low incidence of dengue this year with only three cases recorded.
