Aviation workers strike averted at the last minute in Papua New Guinea

A threatened strike by Papua New Guinea's air traffic controllers was called off late last night after the government signed a guarantee to spend 604 thousand US dollars to settle the unions' claims.

The Post Courier says the unions wanted payment of pay outstanding airfares for retrenched and non-retrenched officers, a 5 per cent salary increase for this year and performance-based salary increments.

The unions had planned to stay away from work until Monday
