10:18 am on 1 July 2004

The Samoan language is to take centre stage at the annual meeting of the Fale'ula o Fatua'i'upu, an international organization dedicated to promote and preserve the native language.

The organization's 2004 conference takes place in Honolulu next week.

Delegates from American Samoa will join those from Samoa, New Zealand, Hawaii and the US mainland, the major locations where the Samoan language is spoken and taught.

Muli'aumasealii Aleni Ripine, who's chairman of the Samoan Language Department at the American Samoa Community College, will report on his efforts to update the Samoan language dictionary.
