SPREP to finalise a five year action plan this week

3:40 pm on 7 June 2004

Environmental officials and planners are to finalise a draft five year action plan for members of the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme and its secretariat.

Forty delegates from 25 SPREP members are gathering in Apia in Samoa from tomorrow.

The new Plan is intended to guide the organization from 2005 to 2009.

SPREP's Director, Asterio Takesy, says the plan will tie in with the organisation's vision of Pacific Island people being able to plan, protect, manage and use their environment for sustainable use.

Before the plan can be implemented, final approval will be needed at the 15th SPREP meeting being planned for French Polynesia in September.
