Solomons deputy speaker files defamation case

2:40 pm on 27 May 2004

The Solomon Islands deputy speaker, Fred Fono, has filed a defamation case in the high court against the prime minister's office.

He is alleged to have bought beer and cigarettes with his constituency development fund.

The prime minister's office claimed he had done so under a duty remission arrangement.

Mr Fono, who doesn't smoke and drink alcohol, has dismissed the claim.

A date for a hearing has yet to be set.
