NZ Samoan community lobbyist reacts to Select Committee findings

6:42 am on 21 May 2004

A New Zealand Parliamentary Select Committee has rejected a petition calling for some Samoans to be reawarded New Zealand citizenship.

A 100-thousand signature petition sought to repeal a 1982 Act, which repealed New Zealand citizenship that had been given to Samoans born between 1928 and 1948.

The Committee found after seven months of research that the Act is in line with international law.

But former MP, Anae Arthur Anae, who drove the campaign for the repeal, says he' s confident the government will try to find a positive solution.
