Fiji police continue probe into Ratu Mara demise

3:22 pm on 4 May 2004

Fiji police are expected to reveal more about their investigation into the ousting of the president during the May 2000 coup.

The probe by the CIB and an internal police found that senior police were involved in the process of removing Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.

A police spokesman Mesake Koroi says his removal is one of seven files still open from the coup.

"Ratu Sir Kamasese was asked to step aside. The interpretation is that as soon as it normalises he was going to come back in. But then he refused as he said OK you asked me to step aside and there's no way I can come back, he's a man of principle. So the legality of it all and the interpretations is still hanging in the air."
