Unsolved Cook Islands murder case being reviewed by NZ investigator

4:05 pm on 25 March 2004

A New Zealand Criminal Investigation branch senior officer Mark Franklin says it's time to refocus the investigation into a seven-year old unsolved murder case in Rarotonga.

Mr Franklin has already completed a preliminary overview into the death of 57-year old Arorangi businessman Mark Chambers who was found stabbed in his home in 1997.

On a three-week visit to Rarotonga to help set up support for local officers to resolve the case, Mr Franklin says they are focussing on a suspect who hasn't been eliminated by the long-running investigation.

"Really, the review is now going into a more of an action sort of phase and refocussing the investigation to go back to various witnesses spoken to a long time ago, yes, it's just a fresh face to have a look at an old crime and refocus some resources into the investigation"
