French Polynesia's Windsong case slowed in date snag

2:33 pm on 11 March 2004

The government commissioner on the administrative tribunal of French Polynesia has withdrawn from a case about the sinking of a tourism ship because of a mistake in dates.

Marie-Christine Lubrano said an application by independent MP, Loic Brigato, was incorrectly dated.

On February the 22nd last year, the territorial president, Gaston Flosse, issued a decree to allow for the immediate sinking of the damaged cruise ship, the Windsong, in the trench between Moorea and Tahiti.

Mr Brigato claimed that with his action, Mr Flosse had defied administrative and environmental laws but Mr Brigato said the decree was issued on February the 15th.

This, Ms Lubrano, has pointed out is an incorrect date.

The administrative tribunal is expected to rule on Mr Brigato's application within the next few weeks.
