The new mayor of Majuro in the Marshall Islands has lived up to promises to reform local government by cutting his own salary.
Rele Alberttar was only sworn in last week, but he announced he would slash local government spending, starting with himself.
He has cut thirteen thousand U.S. dollars from his salary.
In addition to reducing his own wages, Mr Alberttar has said that all local government staff earning more than ten thousand dollars will have their pay cut by five per cent.
He said that local government has no policies and one of the priorities he is working on is to set up systems and policy.
Mr Alberttar also said the local authority does not have a budget in place although it is five months into the fiscal year.
