Women team to contest next governor election in American Samoa

3:28 pm on 3 February 2004

An all women team is to contest the November general election for American Samoa's next Governor and Lt. Governor.

One is described as a veteran employee of the American Samoa government who is about to retire.

The other is a local businesswoman.

A spokesperson for the two says men have been in charge of local government for 27 years and what they have achieved is clearly spelt out in media headlines over the last few years.

She says voters deserve a choice in the election of a new and better government, led by women.

A local bar owner was the first woman to contest the Governorship in the 2000 election, but this year will be the first time since 1977 that an all female team will be seeking both posts.
