American Transportation Security Administration officials in American Samoa are warning travellers that its illegal to carry fireworks onboard an airplane.
The warning comes at a time when fireworks such as cherry bombs, rockets and sparklers are widely used during New year's Eve celebrations.
Local TSA manager, Fatu Ah Soon, says they'll be closely checking for fireworks at Pago Pago International Airport.
Fireworks are strictly prohibited because of the extreme danger they pose should they ignite during the flight.
Any person carrying fireworks illegally faces civil penalties of up to 27,500 US per violation or criminal prosecution with penalties of 250,000 or more and five years in prison.
