Fiji rules out new exams after paper leak

4:46 pm on 1 December 2003

Fiji's education minister has ruled out having a new examination for the Fiji School Leaving Certificate mathematics paper after it was leaked last week.

Ro Teimumu Kepa says the ministry would only reassess the scores of students in the few schools identified as having had access to the leaked paper.

She says this is the best option as most of the students who sat for the mathematics examination were innocent.

Meanwhile, the president of the Fiji Principals Association, Brother Palackal George, says stringent measures need to be put in place to prevent leakage of examination papers in future.

Brother George has told the Fiji Sun newspaper that the education ministry should double check the trustworthiness of all people handling examination papers.

He says it takes only one or two individuals to breach this trust for a major problem to develop.
