Fiji's Auditor General criticises government ministries for ignoring rules

Fiji's Auditor General has criticised government ministries for continuing to ignore rules and procedures that ensure proper accounting of finances, despite previous audit reports.

The comments were in a report tabled by Eroni Vatuleka in parliatment.

The Sunday Times reported that Mr Vatuleka said there was a lack of effective cash managment and a considerable abuse of proper accounting procedures.

He says the officers in charge of accounting in the government supplies department did not seem to understand basic accounting procedures.

The audit report also notes the excessive use of Treasury Bills to meet the expenses of the government, amounting to some 220 million US dollars.
