Australian Opposition lambasts Government for "confused" Solomons policy

4:43 pm on 29 September 2003

The Australian Opposition Foreign Affairs spokesman says the Australian government can't work out whether it's "Arthur or Martha" over its policy on Solomon Islands.

Kevin Rudd says the government now has two conflicting policies on the Solomons.

He says on one hand the Treasurer Peter Costello says pull the troops out; on the other hand Senator Hill says keep the troops there, while the Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says let's send some more off to Papua New Guinea.

Mr Rudd says it's time Mr Howard actually spoke for the government and decided which policy is going to apply.

Mr Rudd was speaking after Treasurer Peter Costello said he hoped Australian troops would be able to leave the Solomons shortly.

The Treasurer said much of the work of the military had been completed, and the rest of the task was up to the police contingent.
