NZ Minister says she will be in listening mode at Pacific Environment conference

4:21 pm on 12 September 2003

The fourth ministerial meeting of Pacific environment ministers starts tonight in Apia.

The conference follows on from the annual meeting of the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme earlier in the week.

New Zealand's Environment and Aid Minister Marian Hobbs is in Apia for the meeting

Ms Hobbs says she'll be very much in a listening mode at the ministers' meeting.

"But I have some questions to ask about waste and waste recovery, and in fact I've just been out looking at a project that NZAID is working in with Apia, dealing with organic matters and taking methane from it and using it for power. So there questions around those sorts of issues and recycling."

There are issues also about farming and ecology. But SPREP has just gone through a reorganisation stage. I'll be interested in the report of that and plans for the future and how we can sort of marry that together.
