Measles and flu epidemics kill more than 100 in PNG's Gulf province

There are fears in Papua New Guinea that outbreaks of measles and flu affecting nearly 2-thousand people and which have killed over 100 in Gulf province, may be spreading to neighbouring Morobe.

The secretary of Catholic Health Services, Esom Manas, says there are 14 suspected cases of flu in Morobe which could be the same strain that has devastated the villages around Kerema in the Gulf province.

Mr Manas says containing the spread is difficult given the terrain, and he says inadequate government immunisation programmes have not helped.
