NZ Press Council won't act on Tongan complaint

8:08 am on 24 June 2003

The New Zealand Press Council has declined jurisdiction over a complaint by the president of the Tonga Media Association, Sangster Saulala, describing it as a transnational issue.

This follows a complaint by Mr Saulala about what he says were false reports about Tonga in the New Zealand media which caused dissent among Tongans.

The Press Council says while it has noted the complaint it cannot accept what is a transnational complaint.

It says three years ago the World Association of Press Councils rejected a proposal for transnational complaints.
