Flag Day celebrations in American Samoa stay after suggestions of cutbacks

American Samoa's Flag Day celebrations will go ahead next month as planned despite calls for them to be cut back.

The governor's office says the events will begin with a church service on July the 2nd and include the usual elements, include the long boat race.

This comes after a Pago Pago representative, Muavefaatasi Ae Ae Jr, questioned the proposed expenses after the territory's losses in last month's floods and land slides.

Flag Day is on April 17th to celebrate the first raising of the United States flag that day in 1900.

This year's celebration was postponed to July after the death of Governor Tauese Sunia in March.
